If there is one wrestler who made the headlines without wrestling at all this year, it is CM Punk. The former WWE champion has been away from the ring ever since his fallout at AEW All Out backstage brawl. But that might change very soon. For weeks, many reports have claimed that Tony Khan has finally got Punk to come back to AEW again.

Also, while not talking about AEW at all for months, Punk has been making comments here and there. Wrestlers like Dax Hardwood have also come out supporting Punk. But despite his comeback being nearly confirmed, we might not see him in Dynamite or Rampage, the Wednesday and Friday AEW shows.

Wrestling Observer reported about Khan’s upcoming plans concerning CM Punk and a new Saturday TV show. They report that Punk’s return and a new Saturday show are going to go hand-in-hand. Khan is planning to bring back Punk despite his backstage troubles with other performers.

With this new show, Khan plans to separate Punk and the people backstage that he may not get along with in AEW. This way Khan can get one of the most talked about stars in wrestling as well as keep his show from falling out like last time.

Wrestling Observer also points out that historically separate productions backstage have not worked for a long time, but this arrangement is only in place for a short time to keep Punk away from certain members of the roster until things get sorted out. This could work similarly to how WWE’s brand split worked in the early 00s with separate rosters for different brands who rarely interact with each other.

Why CM Punk’s arrival on a new show could work?

Punk has always been a show stopping element in AEW. His return to wrestling was the boost that Khan used for the debut of his Friday night show, Rampage as well. Both Punk and Rampage benefitted from coming out at the same time. But this also means that we won’t see Punk at AEW’s primary shows or interact with potentially great opponents.

From a business perspective, this is a tried and trusted method for Khan. From the fans’ perspective, this is a highly debated topic online. While some think that AEW needs Punk back to spruce up the competition and get back in the headlines, others think of this as a mistake.

While this arrangement might separate the two hostile parties, it won’t separate them for a long period. We’ll see if this ends up happening and watch if Khan’s planning might be able to keep Punk and others on the same page despite tensions backstage.
