Cody Rhodes had a great run in AEW. After launching the company, he was front and center as a prestige star who engaged in numerous storied feuds. However, things did not work well for Rhodes, who decided to leave the company and return to the WWE at WrestleMania 38 in April 2023. Before leaving the AEW, Rhodes was asked to be the last opponent for a wrestling icon.

This icon emerged as a massive wrestling idol to Rhodes as he was learning about wrestling during his younger years.

Cody Rhodes could have been Sting’s final opponent

Sting has been an Icon in the pro wrestling industry. Since his initial run, the esteemed wrestler has garnered high praise from both fans and co-workers alike. Among his admirers is Rhodes, who looked up to Sting as a young fan.

During a recent interview, Rhodes talked about his last match in AEW. He revealed it was against Sting. “The last match I was offered in AEW was that match,” Rhodes said. Since the match was never confirmed and he was ready to switch back to the WWE, the feud never happened. “Maybe I’ll pull out a Stinger Splash in his honor. Seriously, cheers to a wonderful career,” Rhodes exclaimed.
