Pro wrestling is a sport that is full of records. From Gunther’s 492 day unbeaten run as the Intercontinental Champion to Roman Reigns’ over 3 years run as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. But one record that is the most coveted and considered the holy grail in the WWE is the total number of World Championship wins.

Currently ‘The GOAT’ John Cena is on the verge of breaking that record. And the joint holder of this record just gave Cena his blessing to go ahead.

John Cena is the biggest superstar in the WWE right now. So much so that the brand even pre-sold the exact dates when he was going to appear on any of their shows. That’s how important Cena is not just to his fans but also to the company.

That said, he is also the joint record holder for the most World Championship wins in WWE history. He has won a total of 16 world championships in his career over the course of 20 years. He is currently tied along with ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair who was the first wrestler to win 16 world championships.

Cena equaled Flair’s record at Royal Rumble in 2017 by defeating AJ Styles and becoming the WWE Champion. Sadly, 2 weeks later he lost the title at the Elimination Chamber. This was also the last time that Cena ever held a WWE world championship.

On his recent appearance on Chris Van Vliet’s podcast, when Vliet mentioned John Cena, Flair was quick to reply that he wouldn’t mind if Cena broke his record. He said, “I mean it wouldn’t bother me at all but John’s home because of the writer’s strike. And I’m not sure why I think Roman’s on some limited schedule. You can’t have your champion sitting home. I mean it affects the arenas and they want to see in the arena who they see on TV. So you can’t have too many guys like that. But I would have no problem with John breaking it”.

Vliet prompted Flair on his thoughts about whether his daughter, Charlotte, would end up breaking the record, saying, “it just feels like it’s gonna be your daughter”. To which Flair happily replied, “I think so, too. I wish for it and I wish for it for the business, it’d be great”. Charlotte Flair once even said that she wants to beat both Cena and her dad and become a 17-time World Champion.

But come Friday, Charlotte Flair will have a chance at winning her 15th World Championship.

The last time Charlotte Flair had a chance at the WWE World Championship was in April 2023. At Wrestlemania 39, she lost her championship to Rhea Ripley, who ended her reign at 92 days.

Post that, Flair has tried multiple times to win a championship but to no avail. But this Friday on SmackDown, Flair has a chance to not only win her 15th World Championship but also get retribution against Damage CTRL who prevented her from winning the title at Fastlane.

It will also be interesting to see if Jade Cargill makes an appearance during the title match. Last week, Flair threw some shade at Cargill. Cargill has also been standoffish to Bayley’s welcome on Twitter. We will just have to wait and watch to see whose side Cargill eventually takes. But what are your opinions on Ric Flair not having a problem with Cena breaking his record?
