Many new fans forget that there was a point when WCW was beating WWE in the Monday Night Wars. With Jim Cornette, Eric Bischoff, and many others as managers, WCW was a force to be reckoned with. The old promotion had several great champions that would go on to make history with the WWE after the former shut down operations.

While Hulk Hogan had the longest title reign and the NWO were cited as the biggest names in WCW, many others also featured as A-Listers. Recently, one WWE Hall of Famer revealed his list of the top five WCW Champions.

While Vince McMahon would like people to forget that WCW ever threatened his company, many older wrestling fans can’t forget that a majority of WWE’s roster comes from the defunct promotion. Eric Bischoff had some fond memories with WCW while working there. He worked with several massive stars before shifting to the WWE. While speaking to MuscleManMalcolm, he was asked who his top five WCW champions were, and his answer was pretty interesting.

Initially, he started out by claiming that it was a tricky question as there were so many good wrestlers in the WCW. However, for his first choice, he said, “Ric Flair right off the bat, we can’t go wrong there.” Flair was one of the most loved performers during his time in WCW. He won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times. Following this, Bishoff named Hulk Hogan as his next choice.

Hogan reinvigorated his career by jumping ship to WCW. He turned heel and adopted the persona of Hollywood Hogan; this would not only keep his stardom alive but also help WCW rival WWE. Just like Flair, Hogan won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times. To this day, Hogan is credited for turning the tide in the ratings game between WCW and WWE.

The next name was Bill Goldberg. Bischoff said, “It was a big moment for WCW.” Although Goldberg won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship only once, he was a massive hit. As mentioned by Bischoff, Goldberg was one of the most prominent wrestlers in the WCW. He did say that they pushed him too hard, but the fans loved it, which made him a massive star. There were two more surprising names to go.

Bischoff says DDP was the ‘real-life underdog’

With three names down, Bischoff named Diamond Dallas Page, or DDP, as his fourth choice. Unlike the others, where he mentioned how good they were to the company, Bischoff went deep regarding DDP. Bischoff said, “He was a legitimate and real-life underdog, nobody in the locker room, his peers didn’t want to see him succeed.” He went on to explain how no matter who he fought, DDP always maintained a positive outlook on everything.

This would transition into DDP’s WWE and yoga career. To this day, DDP remains one of the most positive WWE stars. DDP won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship three times during his run at the promotion. Finally, with one name left to go, Bischoff named Ricky Steamboat as the final name on the list. Steamboat won the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship three times in his career.
