With Hollywood coming to a standstill due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, a part of the WWE Universe would have hoped to see some of their beloved stars coming back to the promotion. Well, if not all, at least one of them made it back to the fold, as John Cena, WWE’s generational star, came back to play a big part at Payback. Still, fans would have loved to see Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

After all, it was October 2019 when Johnson was seen last on WWE programming. The Rock was there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of SmackDown. For nearly four years, he hasn’t been anywhere near the promotion, despite teasing a comeback a few times. Now, The People’s Champion has opened up about his absence from the Stamford-based company.

Johnson was a guest on The Pat McAfee Show which was live from Colorado, the city that plays host to the September 15 episode of SmackDown. Surprisingly, DJ didn’t join the chat via video conferencing, he was there in person on September 15, 2023.

Speaking to host Pat McAfee and other members of the panel, Johnson said he controls his own schedule, subbing criticisms he has often received from WWE fans for no-show. The faithful have called him out each time Cena has made it to the show, who, despite his busy Hollywood schedule, has been able to take time out to grace the promotion.

The Rock revealed that it wasn’t his fear of injuries or scheduling that kept him away from WWE, instead, he revealed, “It comes down to the reason why & what can we create, something we haven’t done for the fans.” Johnson clearly wants to create something special if he does return for an extended program in WWE.
