Back in March, 16-time world champion John Cena cut a brutal promo on his future foe Austin Theory, that left the WWE red in the face. The current United States Champion later went on to have a match against Cena at WrestleMania 39, which he won to have the last laugh. But The Cenation Leader’s words are likely to haunt the WWE forever. Cutting the promo, Cena unwittingly exposed one of the promotion’s practices, which started a debate later. Meanwhile, WWE legend Booker T has come to the company’s aid, weighing in on the debate.
What did John Cena say?
Theory interrupted Cena while he was getting ready to address the crowd on his big return to RAW. The 25-year-old challenged Cena for a match at WrestleMania 39, while the latter refused. John Cena said that Theory did not make the most of the chances that he had received. Humiliated by the statement, the United States Champion took a personal jab and commented on Cena’s bald patch.

It was enough to bring the brutal best out of the 46-year-old who dropped a statement that not only cut Theory but hurt the promotion equally. He accused the WWE of piping in fake crowd noises during Theory’s match, as he wasn’t competent enough to get the cheers.
The noise piping debate gained momentum after fans complained that the WWE used artificial boos during LA Knight’s match against Rick Boogs. It was evident that the actual crowd cheered Knight, even though he is projected as a heel in the company.
Speaking on his Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T said he doesn’t pay too much attention to it. “Just like when we had the pandemic and they piped in the crowd noise, it made the show a little bit better,” the 2x WWE Hall of Famer said. He added, “It’s like having the hot girls in the front row, you say, ‘Man what if they paid them to be there’. Who cares? Some hot chicks sitting in the front row, check ’em out.”
King Booker certainly has an out-of-box thinking about the issue, but it still does not settle the debate. Fans might wonder why the company uses filler noises.
Possible reason for WWE to pipe crowd noises
Before fans start complaining about the use of artificial noises, one has to remember that WWE is entertainment wrestling. It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that over the years, the promotion has given more importance to the entertainment side of things. So, with it comes certain added responsibilities.
Pro wrestling runs on storylines. If the company wants a certain wrestler to work as a heel, it augurs well for him and the promotion if he’s heavily booed. Similarly, a babyface getting cheered on by the crowd is a great prospect for the promotion. It helps the story flow and the tone. In case the opposite happens, the company is forced to pipe in fake noises.

Also, wrestling events take place all over the US and aren’t fixed to one city or venue. Different states have different crowd vibes. While some crowds are very active and responsive, others aren’t. In case of an unresponsive crowd, the promotion has no other choice but to use fillers.
