The Undertaker and The Sting are the most revered figures not only in WWE but in the entire pro wrestling realm. In their long tenure, they have faced the who’s who of the wrestling business.

Sting and The Undertaker faced each other only once in WCW before establishing their iconic characters. The longevity of their careers is also because they developed characters that evolved with the changing times. It is still baffling why these legends never shared the same ring in WWE, even after the WCW was long gone. Wrestling legend Sting outlined the prospect during talks with WWE as revealed in 2020.

The Icon during his contractual talks with WWE in 2014, discussed plans for a WrestleMania match with The Undertaker. But apparently, plans were already in place for The Phenom to face Brock Lesnar. Ultimately, Sting would have his only WrestleMania match against The Game Triple H in a losing effort. Sting on the AEW Unrestricted podcast in 2020 revealed he pitched for a cinematic against The Undertaker but didn’t get any response.“I didn’t want to end the way it ended. I was pushing to get a cinema-style match with Undertaker. For probably a litany of reasons, it just wasn’t going to happen.”
There were a lot of reservations among the WWE creative team, especially Vince McMahon. Both wrestlers were not at their peak, and McMahon is not sure who the winner should have been.
Even before signing in 2014, Sting rejected offers from WWE because of how previous WCW wrestlers were treated. That is the main reason The Icon stayed away from WWE and appeared in TNA until 2014. Nevertheless, he did make a short yet fruitful mark in the promotion during his spell. Moreover, The Undertaker revealed his reasons for not engaging in a match against the AEW star when he appeared in the Stamford-based promotion in 2014.

Undertaker’s outlines his reason for not having a match with Sting

The Deadman on ComicBook.com in 2020 revealed his reasons for not wrestling Sting in WWE. He said “Well, in this world, you never say never, but I think as great as it sounds on paper… And it does, I mean obviously, that is a super marquee match, right? But where I kind of differ from a lot of people is I look past the marquee value and I look on the ability to deliver.”
The Phenom explained how he didn’t believe he could a match between the duo would deliver inside the ring. With the match already touted to be a dream match, it wouldn’t make sense if the match didn’t match people’s expectations.“So like you said, There’s so many people that are clamoring for that match that I just don’t know that the match could deliver on the people’s expectations,” he concluded.

Such dream matches only come to fruition once in a while. Recently we have The Rock who wanted to face off against The Tribal Chief which again seems to be a dream match that will not happen for now. With Cody Rhodes challenging Roman Reigns for the title, it will be interesting to see how a match between the cousins from The Bloodline could pave itself in the future.
