Cody Rhodes is gearing up for his monumental main event at WrestleMania. The WWE is finally realizing the massive potential that many claimed he always had. However, their gain is AEW’s loss. It’s common knowledge that Rhodes had an integral part in bringing the Jacksonville promotion to the levels it has reached today.
In fact, he was one of the founding members of the wrestling company which started back in 2019. Apart from serving as an on-screen character, ‘The American Nightmare’ also served as a backstage creative force for AEW. In short, losing him was not ideal for the company and a WCW legend has come down hard on the company’s head Tony Khan for letting Rhodes go.

Wrestling veteran Diamond Dallas Page or just DDP recently interacted with the Inside The Ropes podcast. He criticized Khan massively for failing to keep hold of the 2023 men’s Royal Rumble match winner. Page said, “He (Rhodes) would write the TVs like it’s challenging to write TVs and storylines and all of that. And Tony was right there Tony Khan but Tony didn’t know how to do that yo he learned that from Cody.”
“But at some point you know… there was no way if I was Tony Khan I’m losing Cody Rhodes there is no way I mean the other guys are important too big time and they are monster superstars. But the guy {Rhodes} who technically knows how to do behind-the-scenes storytelling…” added the 3-time WCW World Heavyweight champion.
It’s hard to disagree with Page as Rhodes is one of the few names in the industry that possess as much force of personality and talent.
Whether they admit it or not, losing him would be a huge blow for AEW. But what exactly was the reason behind Rhodes leaving his brainchild abruptly?
What was the reason behind Cody Rhodes’ unceremonious departure from AEW?
The former Intercontinental champion reportedly had a fallout with Khan as the latter’s visibility massively grew in the promotion. Rhodes who served as the Executive-Vice President left the Jacksonville-based promotion in February last year. His sudden departure was met with utter shock from the masses. Any chances of a comeback were dented when the second-generation superstar appeared in WrestleMania 38 to face Seth Rollins.

DDP who has served as a mentor to Cody Rhodes since a young age is aware of the various talents he possesses. His recent remarks stem from the fact that while AEW continues to flourish, it could have been a different beast had it retained the services of Rhodes. Nevertheless, both parties seem to have moved on from their unceremonious separation.
