Paul Heyman is the manager who had two clients aka WWE Superstars who faced The Undertaker at WrestleMania. While Brock Lesnar broke the streak, CM Punk had an exceptional match with The Deadman. Both the Paul Heyman guys were potential stars to break Taker’s WrestleMania streak. However, The Beast Incarnate had the blessing bestowed on him, and recently the Wise Man explained why it was Lesnar and not Punk. By doing so, the 57-year-old, former manager of Punk, gave the ‘Best in the World’ a reality check after nearly a decade.
CM Punk deserved the win, but not Phil Brooks!
Recently, The Bloodline’s ‘Special Counsel’ appeared in the Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin podcast. In this three-hour-long interview, Paul Heyman shared stories from his WWE journey. One of those was the topic of WWE considering CM Punk to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29.

The 57-year-old started by saying, ” If there’s a guy that could be anointed as a top tier star, if there’s someone that could become equal to Cena at this point in time, the Macho Man to Hogan, The Rock to Steve Austin, a clear 1 and 1A, that if we give Punk this victory, we’ve established someone for the next 20 years as a star.’”
Heyman added, “I thought the case could be made for that. CM Punk was ready to beat The Undertaker. In Vince’s mind, and a lot of other people’s minds, and most likely in Taker’s mind, Phil Brooks was not going to get that victory. CM Punk, yes. Phil Brooks, no. That was their decision. That was their judgment.”
Lesnar’s former advocate knows his current and previous clients very well. At the time, Paul Bearer had passed away and Taker had a story set for the grandest stage. Punk had just lost the title to The Rock and needed a major match at WrestleMania after a high-profile match. However, the Best in the World’s nature didn’t sit well with some of the people backstage in WWE.

Both Taker and Punk put a solid match at the showcase of immortals, but the ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ fell short. Punk has since called this match his favorite. Nevertheless, as one client failed, Heyman’s other client Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30, making the streak 21-1.
Heyman’s reaction when WWE pitched Brock Lesnar vs The Undertaker
After being ringside at WrestleMania 29 with CM Punk, Paul Heyman got another chance to do so with Brock Lesnar in 2014. However, when Vince McMahon proposed this match, The Advocate viewed the outcome of the match in only one way, i.e. Lesnar winning. He said, “When he said Brock versus Undertaker, the first thing in my mind was, ‘Oh, my God, we’re getting the streak.’”
Lesnar was at a different level in 2014, and the same thing happened what Heyman pictured. McMahon went with the decision of The Conqueror to be the ‘One in 21 and 1’ in The Phenom’s WrestleMania match profile.
