CM Punk was fired as a result of a backstage altercation with Jack Perry that took place at AEW All In before his title match. After a week-long investigation, it was finally decided to terminate all agreements with Punk. On September 2, AEW put out a statement about Punk getting fired.

In that very statement, CEO Tony Khan took full responsibility for the decision to fire Punk. He thanked Punk for his contribution to AEW but also said that he made this decision in the best interests of everyone at the company. The same night, he also went out to address the crowd right before Collision started and reiterated the same about Punk’s firing. The crowd, obviously being Punk’s hometown crowd of Chicago started booing Khan right away.

Now, ex-WWE writer and actor Freddie Prinze Jr. is of the opinion that Tony Khan shouldn’t have been the one to make the statement. On a recent episode of his podcast Wrestling With Freddie, he said this would allow CM Punk an upper hand when he unleashes his anger in his first interview post getting fired.

He said, “I’ve felt really bad for Tony Khan, I don’t think he should have made the statement that he made because he is not a good public speaker at all and it gives Punk an opportunity to s**t all over him in his first interview outside of the business or outside of this firing”.

This may be true. Especially as time goes by, more details emerge of what happened that night that led to Punk’s firing.
