About US Open

The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, the United States Open Tennis Championships, takes place in New York City, USA. The tournament is the modern version of the US National Championship, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in tennis.

Generally, the US Open starts on the last Monday of August and lasts a fortnight. The middle weekend coincides with the US Labor Day holiday, resulting in the immense popularity of the tournament across ages.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) owns and started organizing the tournament in 1978. All proceeds from the US Open, be it from ticket sales, screening rights, or sponsorships, are used to further tennis in the country.

The largest and one of the most famous tennis stadiums in the world, the Arthur Ashe Stadium, lies inside the Flushing Meadows complex with a seating capacity of 23,771 spectators. Across the venue, the tournament uses DecoTurf cushion acrylic hard courts.

At the US Open, when the score of the final set reaches 6-6 (fifth set in ATP and third set in WTA), the seven-point tiebreaker comes into play.

US Open Prize Money

The total prize money for US Open 2020 was $53.4 million, down 6.7% from the previous year. It is still the richest Grand Slam tennis tournament in history. The men's and women's singles champions' prize money was reduced to $3 million, and the runners-up collected cheques of $1.5 million each.

The champions of the US Open tennis tournament are given 2000 ranking points and the ATP finalists collect 1200 ranking points, whereas their WTA counterparts are awarded 1300 points.

The prize money of the tournament increased to $57.5 million, a 7.60% increase, in 2021 despite hits from the Covid-19 pandemic. The winners, however, received a lowered amount of $2.5 million, and the runner-ups won $1.25 million.

In 2022, the overall prize money increased once again, touching a whopping $60 million. The prize for the winners and finalists was still smaller than the 2020 prize money. The winners earned $2.6 million, and the runner-ups attained $1.3 million.

Now, in 2023, the prize money has broken records again at a pool of $65 million. In good news for the winners and the runner-ups, the winning amount is back at $3 million and $1.5 million, respectively.
