Stanford Cardinal 2021: News, Schedule, Roster, Scores, Injury Report

The Stanford Cardinal compete in NCAA Men's Basketball as a part of the Pac-12 Conference. Some notable opponent teams from the conference are Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, and USC. They were founded in 1913.

Their original nickname was the Indians, which lasted from 1930 to 1972, when it was changed to Cardinal. The origin of Cardinal is a reference to their university color, and not the bird.

The current logo of the Cardinal is a block letter 'S' with a tree in the center. The Redwood tree wasn't part of the original logo and was added later in the 1990s.

Who is the Coach of the Cardinal?

The current head coach of the Cardinal is Jerod Haase. He joined in 2016 after spending four years as head coach at the University of Alabama.

After being NCAA tournament regulars in the late 90s and the early 2000s, Haase will be aiming to lead the team to their first tournament appearance since 2014. He led them to a 20-win last season, and he will hope to do better in the upcoming season.

Who is the Athletic Director of the Cardinal?

The current athletic director of the Cardinal is Bernard Muir. He was appointed by the Cardinal in 2012. He had previous stints as the AD at Georgetown and Delaware,

Muir served as the chair for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for the 2018-19 season.

Achievements and Championships

The Stanford Cardinal has made 17 appearances in the NCAA tournament and won it in its first attempt. Since then, the team has made the Final Four just once and the Elite Eight twice.

The Cardinal last won a regular-season championship in 2004 and also won the Conference tournament in that season.

The team has won one NCAA Division 1 title so far, with its sole victory coming in 1942.

Greatest NBA Players

Over 30 players from Stanford have made it to the NBA. Some of the greatest Cardinal alumni in the NBA are George Yardley and Jim Pollard, who have been inducted in the Hall of Fame, and Brook Lopez who is currently playing with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Lopez played for the Cardinal from 2006 to 2008 and won many individual achievements.

Some other current former Cardinal in the NBA are Robin Lopez, KZ Okpala, and Dwight Powell.

Mascot and Uniform

The Stanford Cardinal currently doesn't have an official mascot. When the name Indians was dropped, the mascot was dropped as well. They have an unofficial mascot, a Redwood tree, but it is actually the mascot of the Stanford Band.

Unsurprisingly, it is often considered among the worst mascots in the country.

The team colors for the Stanford Cardinal are cardinal red and cool gray.

Current Roster

The Cardinal roster for the 2020-21 season has 16 players.
