About Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles: 2025 Roster, Players, Schedule, Super Bowl Wins and More

The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, playing in the NFC East division. They feature alongside the Washington Commanders, New York Giants, and Dallas Cowboys. The team has a storied history, highlighted by their Super Bowl LII victory in 2018. The team was not an early success, as it posted either one or two victories in seven of its first 10 seasons, but the hiring of head coach Earle (“Greasy”) Neale in 1941 marked the beginning of a turnaround in Philadelphia.

Eagles fans are known for their intense loyalty, making Lincoln Financial Field one of the toughest stadiums for visiting teams. The franchise has changed their home field 3 more times since claiming consecutive NFL championships. 'The Birds' or 'The Iggles' as they are known, feature prominently with the colors of silver, midnight green, and black. More so, they are one of the few NFL teams to have an official fight song

Historical Background of the Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles were founded in 1933 when the remains of the defunct Frankford Yellow Jackets franchise was sold to a syndicate of Philadelphia-based businessmen. The team was named the Eagles in honor of the National Recovery Administration’s eagle symbol, representing hope during the Great Depression. The Eagles claimed three NFL championships before the Super Bowl era. And won their first Super Bowl title in 2018 under head coach Doug Pederson.

The Philadelphia Eagles are privately owned by the Lurie family, with Jeffrey Lurie serving as the team's owner since 1994 when the Oscar-winning movie producer, purchased the team 30 years ago from Norman Braman for a whopping $195 million. The Eagles operate as a traditional for-profit franchise, strategically investing in player development and stadium improvements. Despite private ownership, the Eagles actively support Philadelphia communities through initiatives like the Eagles Autism Foundation and Eagles Charitable Foundation.

Notable Milestones and Achievements

The Eagles have won the league 4 times, with 3 of those wins coming before the Super Bowl era. The franchise lifted the trophy at Super Bowl LII after beating the fancied New England Patriots with backup quarterback Nick Foles.

The Eagles have won three NFL championships (1948, 1949, and 1960) and two Super Bowls (2018 and 2025). Head Coach Earle Neale guided teams featuring star running back Steve Van Buren to an NFL championship game appearance in 1947 and NFL titles in 1948 and 1949.  Slowly regressing in the wake of their consecutive championships, by the mid-1950s the Eagles routinely finished in the bottom half of the league. In 1960 the Eagles, led by quarterback Norm Van Brocklin and Tommy McDonald on offense and linebacker Chuck Bednarik on defense, rebounded to win the franchise’s third NFL championship, a 17–13 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Major Rivalries of the Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have had multiple rivalries over the course of their 87-year-long stint in professional football. From divisonal neighbours the Dallas Cowboys, to San Francisco 49ers, the Eagles have their share of foes.  In the city of Philadelphia, the Dallas Cowboys and their fans are essentially viewed as the spawn of the 'anti-Christ'. There is so much disdain, fury, and vitriol directed towards this team that it's borderline unhealthy. Along with the Packers and the Bears, the Eagles and the New York Giants arguably have the lengthiest and most storied rivalry in all of the NFL. It is a rivalry filled with iconic plays, games, and traditions.

The Washington Commanders and Eagles don't have nearly as much animosity towards each other as they do with the other teams in their division. Every team and fan base seems to hate one another in the NFC East except for the Eagles-Commanders. Don't get me wrong. Eagles fans don't like the Commanders, but this comes more from the fact that they play in the same division and have a lengthy history between the two franchises. They kind of dislike one another by default.  The Eagles' rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers is also known as the "Battle of Pennsylvania", this rivalry showcases state pride despite being an inter-conference matchup. It is much more exemplified with the Flyers-Penguins rivalry, but there's still some animosity between the two largest cities in Pennsylvania. The Eagles and San Francisco 49ers also have a developing rivalry intensified by recent high-stakes playoff encounters. The Eagles' fans have gained the reputation of being one of the most insanely passionate fan bases in all of professional sports. Sometimes, they even go to unfortunate depths to show their devotion to the Birds.

Major contracts of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025

The Eagles have a cap space of $278,011,365 for the 2025 season along with a cap space of $24,032,364 as well as a dead cap of $64,633,262.
