About Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers

History

The Philadelphia 76ers trace their roots back to the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League which was founded in 1946. They are one of the oldest teams in the league. Even though many teams opted to move to the Basketball Association of America when a merger between NBL and BAA was in-talks, the Nationals remained with the NBL. They were one of seven NBL teams that were brought into the NBA after the merger of NBL and BAA in 1949. The team found early success by winning its first NBA title in 1955.

When new owners purchased the franchise in 1963, the team was relocated to Philadelphia. This was after the Philadelphia Warriors had moved to San Francisco. So, the NBA allowed the relocation to fill the void in a major city like Philadelphia. After moving to Philadelphia, a contest was held to find a new name for the team and the winning name was, the "76ers". So far, the Sixers have won three NBA championships.

Who is the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers?

The Philadelphia 76ers are owned by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment LLC which was founded by private equity investors Josh Harris and David Blitzer in September 2017. The investment group led by Harris and Blitzer reportedly purchased 100% of the franchise for $280 million in 2011 from previous owners Comcast Spectacor. The holding company also owns the New Jersey Devils of the NHL and the Delaware Blue Coats of the G-League, among others.

Who is the General Manager of the Philadelphia 76ers?

Former NBA star Elton Brand is the General Manager of the 76ers. Notably, the two-time All-Star also played for the Sixers during his 16-year NBA career. After dominating college basketball for Duke, Brand declared for the 1999 draft. The Chicago Bulls selected the power forward as the #1 pick.

Brand hit the ground running in his rookie season and averaged a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in 81 games. For his impressive performances throughout the season, he shared the Rookie of the Year award with superstar Steve Francis.

After two seasons with the Bulls, Brand was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2001. He continued to play at a high level in the upcoming seasons and established himself as one of the best players in the league. Unfortunately, Brand suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2007 and only played 8 games that season. He was then traded to the 76ers where he played four seasons and contributed decently.

After small stints in Dallas and Atlanta, Brand announced his retirement in 2015. However, he came back from retirement in 2016 and returned to the Sixers where he finished his playing career during the off-season. After his second retirement, Brand was named the player development consultant of the Sixers. A year later he became the GM of the Delaware Blue Coats. Brand was promoted as the GM of the 76ers in 2018.

Team sponsors

The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly signed an "eight-figure deal" with Crypto.com as the team's jersey patch sponsor in 2021. Some of the other major sponsors of the team are 97.5 The Fanatic, BioSteel, Penn Medicine, BetMGM, Kia and Coca-Cola.

Achievements and wins

The Syracuse Nationals were unsuccessful during their time in the NBL from 1946 to 1949. After moving to the NBA in 1949, the team clinched their first division title in 1950. Despite disappointments in the playoffs, the team continued its ascension, winning the division title again in 1952. The Nationals faced the Lakers in the 1953-54 NBA Finals. In an epic game 7, the Lakers clinched the title.

The Nationals reached the Finals in the next year as well and locked horns with the Boston Celtics this time. It was another tightly contested series. In the dying seconds of the game, NBA legend George King gave the Nationals the lead by sinking a free-throw and then stole the inbound pass to clinch the franchise's first-ever championship in 1955.

The reigning champions struggled in the next season - a trend that continued in the years that followed. The team was then relocated to Philadelphia by new owners in 1963. Also, the team's name was changed to the Philadelphia 76ers after a naming contest. The Sixers then made a bold move by acquiring superstar Wilt Chamberlain from the Warriors. Led by Chamberlain, the 76ers became one of the best teams in the league, with other stars such as Billy Cunningham and Hal Greer.

After winning the division title in 1966 and 1967, the team reached the 1967 Finals against the Warriors. The Warriors' history with Philadelphia added fuel to the contest. Chamberlain and his teammates helped the 76ers clinch the second title by beating the Warriors in six games. This brought an end to their 12-year title drought.

After one more season, the 76ers traded Chamberlain to the Lakers. In the seasons that followed, the team struggled to make deep runs in the playoffs. The Sixers then made a blockbuster $3 million move to bring superstar Julius Erving to the team in 1976 when the ABA merged with the NBA. Erving was already a two-time ABA champion and brought immediate success leading the 76ers to the Finals.

After taking a 2-0 lead against the Trail Blazers, the team shockingly lost the next four games and lost the title. The Sixers then lost the 1980 and 1982 Finals against the Lakers. The 76ers finally avenged their losses when they swept the Lakers for their third title in 1983.

After the 1983 season, the 76ers struggled to make the Finals despite the efforts of NBA legend Charles Barkley. After Barkley left the team, the Sixers did not make the playoffs for a few years. Then superstar Allen Iverson brought new energy to the franchise. Iverson led the team to the Finals in 2001. Unfortunately, the Sixers lost the series 4-1.

In recent years, the Sixers have become one of the best teams in the league with the entry of 2022 NBA MVP Joel Embiid. However, he is yet to lead the team to the ultimate stage.

Key players and coaches

The Philadelphia 76ers have had some great players and coaches over the years. The franchise has retired the jerseys of the following legends: Dolph Schayes (4), Hal Greer (15), Dave Zinkoff, Billy Cunningham (32), Wilt Chamberlain (13), Julius Erving (6), Maurice Cheeks (10), Bobby Jones (24), Moses Malone (2), Charles Barkley (34) and Allen Iverson (3).

Philadelphia 76ers mascot and uniforms

Franklin the Dog has been the mascot of the 76ers since 2015. Currently, the Sixers don white uniforms for home games, blue uniforms for away trips, and an alternate uniform in red. Also, the team has various other uniforms like the City edition, Earned, etc.

Philadelphia 76ers’ rivals

The Boston Celtics are arguably the biggest rivals of the 76ers. Being two of the oldest teams in the NBA and also from the same Conference, the two have a feisty rivalry. The teams have clashed a record 19 times in the playoffs. The Celtics have mostly dominated, winning 12. The trend continued in the 2022-23 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals when the Celtics eliminated the 76ers 4-2.

The Los Angeles Lakers are another major rival of the Sixers because of their history in the Finals. The two have battled in the Finals six times and the Lakers have won on five occasions. The Lakers' dominance started in 1950 when they defeated the Sixers 4-2. In the 1953-54 Finals, the Lakers again came out on top with a 4-3 win. The two teams clashed in the 1980 Finals and the Lakers won 4-2. The Lakers again defeated the 76ers 4-2 in the 1982 Finals. The Sixers and the Lakers once again locked horns the next year. This time, the 76ers swept the Lakers for their third title in 1983.

Fast forward to the 2000-01 season, the teams again faced each other on the ultimate stage. Notably, led by Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, the Lakers had swept every opponent in the playoffs that year. They were looking to set the record by sweeping the 76ers as well. However, Allen Iverson and the Sixers shocked everyone by winning game-1 at the Lakers' home. But the run was short-lived as the Lakers won the next four comfortably to win the title.

Why are the Philadelphia 76ers called the 76ers?

The Philadelphia 76ers' name originates from the year 1776, the year the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia.
