About Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys: 2024 Roster, Players, Schedule, Super Bowl Wins and More

Founded by Clint Murchinson Jr, the Dallas Cowboys first saddled up in 1960 and soon became the America’s Team. Well, that’s the name they are called by! The franchise is a professional American football team based in the Dallas ”“ Fort Worth metroplex. The Cowboys are the most expensive franchise in NFL history, and currently belong to the NFC East division.

Having over 8.5 million fans online and a ‘Lone Star’ on their helmet, the team is one of the most popular franchises in the league. The Cowboys play currently at Arlington, Texas, and their practice facility is in Frisco, Texas. This Blue and White squad, which has won 5 Super Bowl Championships (1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, 1995), and 24 division championships, are known for a large, loyal fanbase and a rich history of success.

A look into the history of the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys' story began in 1960 with Clint Murchison Jr. founding the team. He brought professional football to Dallas after overcoming many hurdles, including a bitter rivalry with Washington Redskins owner, George Preston Marshall. This rivalry happened because when Murchison Jr. was determined to bring an NFL team to Dallas, he needed a unanimous vote from the league’s owners. And Marshall, whom he had a falling out, was the one blocking him. Hence, in a clever move, Murchison paid just $2500 to get Marshall’s support, and that vote secured Dallas its own NFL team. And then after difficult negotiations, Murchison finally brought the Cowboys to life, marking the start of the historic franchise.

However, in terms of performance, despite early struggles, they didn't find real success until 1966 when they began an incredible 20-season winning streak. This streak included 18 playoff appearances and five Super Bowl trips. During the 70s and 80s, they became “America's Team,” with legends like Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett leading the charge. Then by 1989, Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys, replacing long-time coach Tom Landry with Jimmy Johnson. Jones quickly rebuilt the team, leading them to multiple Super Bowl wins in the '90s, securing their reputation as a powerhouse. Today, the Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world, worth over $9 billion, selling out stadiums and continuously adding to their legacy. Their current home, AT&T Stadium, has become an iconic venue for one of football's most storied franchises.

Notable milestones and achievements

The Dallas Cowboys have been to Super Bowls eight times and have won five (VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX). In addition to that, they also have won 8 NFC championships so far. However, the most notable seasons for the team were in the 1970s and 1990s. During the 1970s period, the Cowboys played in 6 NFC championships, and won 105 regular season games.

Besides it in the 1990s, quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith, and wide receiver Michael Irvin led the Cowboys’ offense to a different level. This triplet helped the franchise to a 52-12 regular season record and 3 Super Bowl championships in 4 years, winning Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX.

Major rivalries of the Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys vs Washington Commanders: Due to their founder Clint Murchison Jr.’s bad blood with Washington’s then owner, George Preston Marshall, the rivalry has been established, and is continued till date. They have faced off each other 128 times, with the Dallas Cowboys winning 78 games and the Washington Commanders winning 48 games.

Dallas Cowboys vs Philadelphia Eagles: This is a 63 year-long intra-divisional rivalry with the two teams contained in the same division since 1961. They have met each other 130 times, in which the Eagles have won 56 games, while the Cowboys have 74 games in hand.

Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants: Perhaps their 31-31 tie in their first face off has led to this rivalry, besides the NFC East factor. They have played 124 times with each other. Cowboys have won 75 while Giants have won 47, with two ties till date.
