Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson devoted over 13 years of his life to the NBA. During the same, he accumulated a net worth of only $40 million. Nothing to sneeze at, but in today’s league that’s a 1-year max contract. Johnson, however, used that wealth to work his way up. From various investments and ownership stakes, Johnson amassed a net worth of over $600 million! He is the third richest individual to ever be associated with the NBA. Life for Magic, however, wasn’t always so full with money.

Magic is currently on cloud nine. Having finally fulfilled his dream of co-owning an NFL team, the five-time NBA champion is getting into the groove of things with the Washington Commanders. Before they head off for their first game this year, Johnson was attending an event for the franchise. At one point, he was surrounded by members of the press who wanted to engage the player in a Q and A session. During the same, Johnson recalled how he talked to Commanders co-owner Josh Harris about wanting to be in the community so that he could create an everlasting impact in Washington.

This further led to a conversation that took place when Johnson approached a member of the local Boys & Girls Club. There, Magic said that when the youngster graduates next year, he is going to be receiving a scholarship from the Lakers legend himself.

“I’m gonna impact your life just like somebody impacted my life,” said Johnson during the press conference. “So that’s what it is all about.”

Magic Johnson knows the impact that a decent amount of money could have on a growing or struggling individual’s life. That is why he has never faltered from using his $620 Million net worth to help the less fortunate.

Back in March, when the NBA legend’s father passed away, Johnson announced a scholarship for African American students who attend Michigan State University.

From humble beginnings in Michigan

Having recently bid adieu to his European vacation, it might be hard to recall how the legendary point guard got here.

Magic Johnson wasn’t someone who wasn’t a part of a privileged home. Johnson Sr. used to work as a janitor at a used car lot in order to support his family. The young Johnson would often accompany his father when he was collecting garbage. This resulted in him being the subject of verbal bullying from the neighborhood kids, who referred to Magic as “Garbage Man.

Having developed his basketball skills early on, the future Lakers star received a scholarship to attend Michigan State University. There, he established his base as a prominent professional player and future star.

The help he received from the college, along with his own skills, helped to mark his entry into the NBA. Having come from nothing, Magic Johnson has made it his mission to help out others.
