Sometimes numbers do not show how effective a player is. Or at times, when you are surrounded by superstars, your contribution is overshadowed. Miami Heat legend Udonis Haslem and his NBA buddy Mike Miller highlighted one such case in their podcast recently. Having played alongside Chris Bosh, Haslem values the 11x All-Star at a high level. In a detailed analysis of his career, Haslem did not hesitate to put Bosh over LeBron James during their time at the Heat. Well, that has already started a debate online.
Haslem believes Bosh is irreplaceable, but the King can be replaced. Miller started the topic, “I’m telling you, if [Chris Bosh] stayed healthy, he’d still be playing”. Udonis Haslem added to it, “Everybody thinks that our most important player was Bron. Our most important player, not our best player, our most important player was CB[Chris Bosh].”
The 43-year-old also added, “If Bron went down, you could bring in D-Wade, it’s not the same player but you are going to get similar results of what you’re going to get out of the players”. Haslem is speaking about the Heat Nation’s time before the 4x NBA MVP arrived when Dwyane Wade was the anchor in the offense. Notably, James was not the only one who arrived in 2010.

Bosh’s efficient numbers continued at the Heat after he left the Toronto Raptors. Mainly in the championship years, Bosh averaged 18 and 16.6 points, shooting close to 50% from the field. Oh, and let’s not forget his iconic rebound and pass to Ray Allen, which helped them seal the Finals against the Spurs. Although his numbers are less in comparison with Wade and James, there is no denying that Bosh was crucial for the Heat’s 4-straight Finals run.

Also, it made the job much easier for Wade. The 3x NBA champion who was “lonely” at the top wanted some company. So he took a seat back and Bosh was one of them who led the team.

When it’s a team full of superstars, one man cannot be the franchise cornerstone. Wade was the leader for the Heat in the 2000s. When two more stars from the 2003 NBA Draft were added to the team, D-Wade decided to share the role. He said, “ I don’t want to be at the head…It’s lonely at the head of the table, so when LeBron came, and CB came, I was like ‘You want to sit at the head? Cool, I’m gonna go where I’m comfortable”.

The very fact that Wade is considering Bosh as one of the heads shows us how important he was for the Heat. Several players like Bosh have averaged similar numbers for different teams. But we are not speaking just stats here. It takes more than that to be a leader and to be accepted by your team. Bosh’s two-way excellence, his guidance, and a lot of other factors make him irreplaceable.
