The summer of 2023 has been a good time to be an American sports fan. Usually a period of quiet, fans in the country have had a ton to catch up on. Whether it is a young basketball group taking over for Team USA or Lionel Messi wreaking havoc for Inter Miami, headline-worthy news has been a staple of the summer. However, what has recently taken over sports discussions is the track & field team’s controversial victory for Team USA at the World Athletics Championship. However, 5x NBA Champion Magic Johnson is also a fan of the festivities.

Celebrating the divisive victory, Johnson remains an admirer.

The all-time leader for assists per game in NBA history, Magic understood the concept of team sports. Since he joined the league, Johnson knew the importance of elevating a team together. That mentality, paired with innate basketball IQ, allowed him to firmly etch himself in the history books.

So for a team relay race where each individual is assisting the next, the Los Angeles Lakers legend was the perfect foil. Congratulating the team on a historic, albeit chaotic, victory was almost inarguably the greatest point guard ever.

“A huge congratulations to our U.S. mixed 400M relay team Justin Robinson, Rosey Effiong, Matthew Boling, and Alexis Holmes for winning the gold medal AND setting a new world record!”, read his heartfelt wish on X.

Taking place in Budapest, the World Athletics Championship has been a joy so far. While the track and field teams have already caught the world’s attention, Team USA’s record-setting triumph adds further gravitas to the event. However, it was mere seconds that changed the entire finish.

Netherlands stumbles, USA soars

While the race was setting up for a historic finish nevertheless, it wasn’t the USA that stood to earn all the marbles. Instead, the opportunity barely slipped from the grasp of the Netherlands team. Their star sprinter, Femke Bol, was right on the cusp of a monumental victory. But tragedy struck.

Claiming to have cramped in the final moments, Bol stumbled and fell to the ground. In a split second, the race was over as Alexis Holmes surged past the finish line, ensuring USA’s victory and a record-breaking time of 3:08:80.

While the final result wasn’t what the men and women in orange were expecting, Femke has long established her credentials on the track. Perhaps, the next race will bring better luck to the team. As Team USA celebrates an uber-successful time in Budapest, all eyes turn to Magic’s preferred sport. Will the boys from Team USA make the team proud?
