The UFC, as we know it today, is a highly advanced and progressed form of combat sport. Fighters are categorized into weight classes, and they fight in the same division. This is done to ensure that there’s no unfair advantage being given to anyone and that a fair fight takes place. However, it wasn’t always like that.

The UFC was founded in November 1993 and the weight classes weren’t introduced until 1997. The first UFC card to have weight-class was the UFC 12 in Dothan, Alabama. So, from the first-ever UFC event till the 11th, it was all about two fighters stepping inside the cage and fighting it out. The weight didn’t matter.

The clip that the 4x NBA champion posted on his story was from a UFC 3 fight. The two fighters in the cage were Keith Hackney and Emmanuel Yarbrough. To put this fight into perspective, Hackney was a 5’11, 200lbs fighter, whereas the late Yarbrough was a 6’8, 600lbs fighter.

To even imagine a similar matchup in today’s time, in a sport as dangerous as mixed martial arts, might be a crime. However, the fight took place and Yarbrough, to everyone’s surprise, lost the fight.
