Records are made to be broken. While every athlete wishes to be in the history books of their respective sport, what does it mean to surpass your idol? DeMar DeRozan is on the verge of doing just that in a matter of days now. Although the Chicago Bulls star is going to have his name ranked higher, DeRozan is at a loss for words.

During a recent conversation, he was asked about surpassing the Boston Celtics legend on the scoring list. While the 34-year-old surely was happy, he dedicated his time to talking about greatness and what it means to him.

Every great athlete who has been a part of this game has set some records to their name. It can either be individual or all-time, these milestones represent their brilliance. Earlier in February this year, LeBron James surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points record. Kareem had held that record for 39 years and this year, we have a different name at the pole position. While LeBron continues to add to his tally, that record will inspire generations to come to try and break that record. Similarly, DeRozan is about to surpass one of his influences on the all-time scoring list.

Larry Bird, in his illustrious career, scored 21791 points. The 3x NBA champion is about to be surpassed by DeRozan who is only 33 points behind the Celtics legend. DeRozan currently stands at 21758? points in the 39th position whereas Bird is at the 37th position with Chris Paul in between them.

When asked about him surpassing Bird, he said, “Listen, that?s a player who I watched a whole bunch of film of over the years.” The 34-year-old also described Bird in two words, he said Bird was a “bad man.”?Showing utmost respect for the veteran, DeRozan said “I use it to trash talk for fun. But from a fan perspective, it?s amazing. It?s an honor.”

In the same conversation with NBA Sports Chicago, DeRozan fanboyed over Michael Jordan and the late great Kobe Bryant. He said that as a fan he never wanted Kobe to retire. He also recalled when MJ retired from the Bulls, the fans in DeRozan knew that the 6x NBA champion would make a comeback. Additionally, DeRozan himself is in his 15th season in the league. Although he is very cautious of the way he treats his body, DeRozan said that he is nothing but grateful to be able to still compete at a high level.
