The entire sports world was shocked when NBA veteran Magic Johnson revealed he was diagnosed with HIV. Around 30 years ago, the world thought the virus was a death sentence. Naturally, fans and his fellow players were worried about him. It was a tough moment for the player and his family. As former NBA player Dennis Rodman recalled those days, he revealed about the legend’s struggles.

In the book, ‘I should be dead by now’, the Detroit Pistons legend touched upon the matter. After the shocking news, Rodman looks back to the time and reflected upon his recklessness.

Johnson was a legend in what he did on the court. In 1991, he said that he had HIV. He was at the peak of his career when he revealed he was retiring from the league. Despite several misleading comments, the NBA world stood as a pillar of support for the legend.

Rodman recalled that back then the world used to think of the disease as a death sentence and said, “The NBA circled around Magic, stood by him, just as they should have.” 

Looking back in time, he also reflected on his life. He seemed to have a very different thought. In the same book, he revealed his opinion, If it had been me that tested HIV positive, they would have kicked my a** out of the league in a heartbeat”.

There were moments when he was a bit reckless with things. Just like his feud with NBA Commissioner David Stern. The legend sported a lot of tattoos, which Stern wasn’t really fond of. He had a ‘Bod Boy‘ image and Stern wanted to change that. There were several moments when the two locked horns.
