The Boston Celtics legend graced his presence in the first-round match of Frances Tiafoe. An internet uproar was generated by the NBA champion’s public display of affection for the sport and the 25-year-old player. Garnett was recently spotted at the US Open supporting fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe. Garnett attended the US Open match between Tiafoe and the 17-year-old Learner Tien at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Tiafoe recorded a scintillating win within three sets, qualifying him for the next round.
During the press conference, they ought to ask Tiafoe what having Kevin Garnett in attendance means to him, to which he replied, “Want to see me, want to meet me, it’s cool. Some of that is super humbling. Obviously, Big Ticket is a legend, so seeing him was super cool. He sent me a funny voicemail before the tournament. It’s cool he’s able to come out here.”
Tiafoe embraced and appreciated the attendance of many players from different sporting backgrounds. He brought to light on the influence these athletes have on their followers, which may encourage individuals of color to take up tennis.
“Diversity in sport speaks volumes. Obviously, it has people tune into the game that usually wouldn’t. He’s one of them, and many others. I have to keep winning so they stay interested. Obviously, I want to impact a lot of people of color to want to pursue the game of tennis.”
