The 6′ 9 Carlos Boozer recently released his biography called “Every Shot Counts: A Memoir of Resilience.” He tells the story about how he wanted to play in the baseball World Series in his memoir. He looked up to the Seattle Mariner pitcher Randy Johnson. However, because of an incident that occurred during his regional championship game, he decided to quit baseball.
Boozer’s baseball team had made it to the regional finals game and were just 2 wins shy from representing his hometown Alaska in the World Series. So, in the championship match, he pitched very well and struck out two batters. Everything was going great for his team until he came to bat. His family, friends, and everyone were rooting for him as he was a great batter. But unfortunately, he got tagged at the first base and was called out. His coach was very mad and said to him, “Why didn’t you run harder, you could’ve made it.”
Looking at his coach’s reaction, Boozer just apologized to his coach even though he knew he had given his all. But then his coach made him sit out and did not let him play for the rest of the match. Even when their team was losing Boozer was not given a chance to play and the worst part was he did not even know the reason why he wasn’t allowed to help his team out. His father tried to speak to the coach and told young Carlos that he hadn’t done anything wrong. He kept replaying that moment in his head trying to uncover a clue to understand the behavior of his coach. And he got his answer from the television when he saw Michael Jordan during the 1993 NBA finals. He realized that his heart truly belonged to basketball.
