Building a grand legacy and the journey from being a great basketball player to one of the powerhouses of the league was never an easy feat for O’Neal. Very few can recognize and appreciate rising stars in the league. One of them was Johnson. He revealed that the seasoned media veteran interviewed the Lakers icon when he was just a rookie about to start college in 1991.

In the clip crafted as a tribute to Johnson, O’Neal recounted the story. Recalling those days he said, “You taught me that I was famous because in 1991, I was a guy by the name of Shaquille O’Neal, who lived on an army base, who was local and I used to watch Ernie Johnson on TV.” He added, “And my guy called me and said, ‘Hey Ernie Johnson wants to interview you’ and I was like who me?”

Other co-hosts of TNT’s ‘Inside the NBA,’ including Charles Barkley, shared their good wishes to the veteran. Like Sir Charles, O’Neal also holds his co-host in high regard. The Lakers legend is often seen supporting the 67-year-old during arguments. He doesn’t even mind opposing his longtime friend, Chuck. He also once stated how he used to watch TNT’s ‘Inside the NBA‘ for Johnson.
