Relieved After Narrow Escape From Suspension, 7x NBA Champ Reflects on 28YO Controversial Brawl

Robert Horry is a winner. During his time in the NBA, he has proven himself to be one of the best players at clutch time, and racked up seven rings along the way. Always the nice guy, Horry just wanted to make himself and his family proud; however, it was difficult for him to stay away from trouble on the court.

Having played with players like Shaquille O’Neal and Vernon Maxwell, Horry always seemed to find himself in the middle of an altercation. Trying his best to de-escalate many situations, Horry was once spared from getting suspended.

Robert Horry was always there for his teammates

In a recent episode of the Big Shot Bob podcast, Robert Horry was talking about the time he avoided getting a suspension, but his teammate was not so lucky.

Back in 1995, when Horry played for the Houston Rockets, one of his teammates who was notorious for getting into fights was Vernon Maxwell, also known as ‘Mad Max‘. Having a nickname like that should have been enough to know not to mess with the guy. But two fans tried to test their luck.

During a game, Maxwell got into a verbal argument with some people in attendance. The fans were relentless, and Maxwell was also hurling it back. But at one point, Maxwell had enough, and he walked up to the people in the stands and punched them.

Horry was one of the first ones to step in and separate Maxwell from the crowd. Horry recalled Maxwell was suspended for 10 days. Although Horry feared that he might get suspended for going into the stands, he surprisingly did not face any consequences, as his only motive was to bring his teammate back to the court.

Horry revealed that he did not physically touch any fans or argue with them. He just brought his teammate back to the bench and so he was spared from a suspension.

Horry has kept himself away from fights

Shaq never held back when he was in the NBA. He was a dominant player and constantly made his way to the basket by going through players with contact. Having played with so much physicality, it was not uncommon to see Shaq swinging at someone on the court.

But one time, when this happened in a match against the Chicago Bulls, Horry was on the court with Shaquille O’Neal, and Shaq got into a fight with Brad Miller. Both of them were big men and towered over everyone else. Shaq was swinging frantically, and all the players were trying to separate the two at baseline.

But Horry decided it was wise for him to stay back and let them figure things out rather than getting into the fight and trying to separate them.
