Regarding Shaq’s Draymond Green Defense, 7x Champ Doubles Down on Lakers Legend’s 1 Uncanny Trait

The NBA has recently suspended Draymond Green for five games, after he put Rudy Gobert in a chokehold and dragged him on the court. Although this has received mixed reactions from fans and players, Los Angeles Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal recently admitted publicly that he would have done the same thing.

In a recent episode of the Big Shot Bob podcast, the main point of conversation was Green’s suspension. As this conversation continued, Robert Horry was asked his thoughts on Shaq siding with Draymond Green.

Robert Horry understands Shaq’s sentiment toward Draymond Green

Horry feels like most players will try to protect their teammates. It might not always be putting your opponent in a chokehold and pulling them apart, but they would take some sort of action to separate the players when altercations happen on the court.

When Horry was asked about Shaq’s comment about him saying that he would have done the same, Horry said, “Most guys would have.” But for Shaq specifically, it was not uncommon to see Shaq swinging at his opponents on the court. But there was one thing that always stayed a constant.

As recalled by Robert Horry, Shaq would constantly find himself in an altercation right under the rim. This is mostly because that’s where he spent most of his time on the court. Horry also recalled staying away from a fight once Shaq got into an altercation with Brad Miller of the Chicago Bulls.

Horry said, “It was right under our basket, and it seemed like everybody—it seems like Shaq always gets into a fight under the basket.”

Green’s actions essentially escalated the incident, and thus the suspension is deserved. Although these actions were wrong and it was right for people to question Draymond’s judgement, Shaquille O’Neal decided not to slam Green.

Shaq empathized with Green

Shaquille O’Neal revealed on TNT that he would have done the same for his teammates. He was an old-school player and he would take it upon himself to protect his teammates.

Shaq said, “Like, me and you are doing the interview right now — somebody come put their hands on you, I’m gonna beat them up ‘cause you’re my guy… But you get these people who say it was wrong — like, I try not to be a hypocrite. I would’ve done the same thing.” 

Shaq never held back when he was in the NBA. He was a dominant player and constantly made his way to the basket by going through players with contact. But this has also led to him getting into constant altercations on the court.
