The NBA has seen some significant changes made to the league since its inception in 1946. While plenty to pull from, the biggest difference between modern NBA and the one before it has to be the introduction of the three-point line. This change which was introduced in 1979, saw the game become more accessible as the era of big men slowly started to dwindle. With the start of the 80’s, guards became more prevalent in the NBA as stars like Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan burst onto the scene.
This was the case well into the 2000’s as backcourt players such as Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson and Dwyane Wade became integral to the league. While guard’s such as Stephen Curry still thrive today, there has been a recent resurgence from the big men. Centers have dominated the MVP award for the past 3 years while the 2023 NBA Draft was headlined by 7’4 center Victor Wembanyama. With the roles and responsibilities of a center evolving every year, former Celtics-duo Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, recently discussed the role of Wemby with the Spurs as they compared him with current NBA centers.

During a recent episode of ‘KG Certified’, Kevin Garnett and former teammate Paul Pierce discussed the various roles Victor Wembanyama could play for the San Antonio Spurs this coming season. Speaking of the hyped Frenchman, KG seemed lost on how to play him as he questioned his teammate, ‘How do you use him P?” The 2008 champion didn’t miss a beat as he answered KG’s query stating, “I mean that’s up to Gregg Popovich.”
Not impressed by his teammate’s response the 2004 MVP reiterated his question to which Pierce replied that Wemby needed to be “everywhere“. Explaining that the center had “unlimited” talent, the ‘Truth’ believed that the first overall pick only needed to “develop” in his first season.
Still questioning the ‘mastery’ that had been creating quite a stir since last year, Garnett then asked Pierce if he would rather have Wemby play as a “slasher” or a “traditional big“.

Much to KG’s annoyance Paul replied that he didn’t even “know what a traditional big was“. But replying to his question none the less stated, “Ain’t no traditional?big no more. I just need him to be a player.”
47-year-old draws parallels with Jokic, AD an Embiid while speaking of Wembanyama
Although Paul Pierce’s take on “traditional big’s” wasn’t far from the truth, it didn’t completely answer the question that Garnett posed, how do you use Victor Wembanyama? To answer this question, the 15x NBA All-Star drew parallels to Anthony Davis, Jokic and Embiid as he compared them to the young wonderkid.

Speaking about how the league is evolving, KG believed that Wemby could be used like Embiid and AD, believing that the 7 footers height would allow him to play as a traditional big. While he did offer that idea KG finally concluded that Wemby could eventually evolve into a “Joker type player” as he could dish out “passes like a quarterback.” From almost missing out on becoming an NBA player to having an illustrious career as one, Garnett has now transitioned into the life of media post-retirement.
