8x NBA All-Star Dwight Howard is one of the most dominant forces in the league. Straight from high school to the NBA, the champ had shown explosive performances during his run in the NBA. What’s remarkable about his game is how he managed to perform at his peak despite maintaining an unhealthy diet as an athlete. Yes, you read that right. Candies and McDonald’s in an athlete’s diet are not the most suitable choice. Regardless, he was terrific in his game, but soon, his odd diet started to show its impact. After injuries and much-needed doctors’ intervention, the champ was able to change his game.

During his recent appearance in his podcast show, ‘Above the Rim with DH 2,’ Howard detailed his entire journey of how he switched from 2 dozen candies to three apples to maintain good health.

By actually putting more into what I was eating it afforded me a championship.” When asked about his routine, he shared about his “deadly” addiction. “During the day I can only have green apples. I had gained like 30 lbs off the injury so I was like I need to do something to get back in shape.  it was one meal a day for 30 days.”

Dwight Howard’s love for sugar and the danger it posed to him

It took a bad injury in 2012, for Howard to realize the impact of his sugar indulgence on his body. His diet included Skittles, chocolate, honey buns, cream pies, candy bars, and McDonald’s before every game. Nutritionist Cate Shanahan was shocked to see the amount of sugar that was involved in his diet and suggested to make changes immediately and that began with cutting down the sugar level.

During the conversation, the Los Angeles Lakers star mentioned how his doctor helped him get through the tough journey toward a healthy diet and life. “Well, I wasn’t getting tired as fast during games. My body felt different. My face looked a little bit different,Howard said in an interview. “I felt all the benefits that happen when you take something bad from your diet. The biggest thing for me in games is fatigue.”
