When you’ve lived a life like Magic Johnson, you’ve got more than a few stories to tell. He spilled some of the best to Jennifer Hudson, including having impromptu parties with some of the biggest pop icons in history. In the spirit of Throwback Thursday, during his appearance on  The Jennifer Hudson Show, Earvin “Magic” Johnson recalled how he had to fulfil a late request for the one and only Prince.

Magic and Prince are one of the famous pop and sports crossover friendships ever. “I went on tour with Prince too. Isiah Thomas and I were big Prince fans.” They were close enough for Prince to call the NBA legend and entrepreneur to use one of the locations of Magic Johnson Theaters, a chain of theaters the billionaire has operated since the ’90s. “So I get a call and Prince said what’s up.”

He told Magic, “I want to rent out your theater.” The 5x NBA champion was willing to go the extra mile for his friend and said he didn’t have to rent it as he’d let him use it. But Prince was adamant to follow through his plans to a T which he relayed to Johnson. “I want to come in though, at one in the morning,” Magic recalled Prince’s conversation, which Hudson said, “That sounds like Prince.”

Further, Prince tells the Los Angeles Lakers legend, “I want to bring a busload of people. But we going to have pajamas on. Is that okay?” Magic Johnson graciously agreed.

Magic even spoke to the manager of the theater to ensure Prince and his party are taken care of. He even ensured there was staff ready for him at 1 a.m. However, the 3x NBA MVP was present at the party himself.

Magic Johnson went above and beyond for Prince

Magic Johnson said he had to make sure Prince was okay. So he went back to sleep and woke up around midnight to go to the Magic Johnson Theater. As scheduled, Prince’s cortege arrived.

They were like little kids laughing at every joke. Everything that happened, wearing pajamas, I mean just what he said, what happened and that was one of the biggest thrills too, to have Prince in the hood at my theater come on with his team of people, just it showed you how important those theaters were to the community,” Magic recalled.

Though Johnson is no longer involved with the operations of the theater company, his friendship with Prince remains eternal. When the “Purple Rain” icon passed away in 2016, Magic expressed, “I am so devasted by the passing of my good friend Prince,” on Twitter. “Prince and Michael [Jackson] were the only artists I actually followed around the world to see their stellar performances live.”

Prince is still sorely missed. But at least he left his old friend Magic Johnson with some great memories.
