As if it wasn’t enough to suffer a rout in Philadelphia, in comes Robert Horry to rub salt in the Los Angeles Lakers‘ gaping wound. Horry adores his purple and gold. He’s won three of his seven rings with them. He still gives the team his benefit of the doubt as a sportscaster. But he didn’t mince his words today.

After the Lakers suffered a 94-138 blowout loss to the 76ers, he brutally called it an “old-fashioned whooping” on the Spectrum Sports Net post-game show. He did say the Lakers were good. The Philadelphia 76ers were just better today. Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid impressed on the court today as they combined for 61 points. Meanwhile, the Lakers star duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis could only combine for 35 points.

Speaking from experience of 16 seasons in the NBA, Horry said, “You’re going to have nights like this in the NBA where the other team is just on fire.” He hopes the Lakers accept that and focus on winning the next game because every team is going to suffer a classic blowout in a season.

He said that the Lakers were bound to struggle when the Sixers were scoring threes. He admired “the zone” Embiid’s squad slipped into to become scoring machines on Monday night. It was contrary to how the Lakers fared tonight.

The Sixers were on home turf today at the Wells Fargo Center. The energy paid off as they dominated on the tail of Embiid’s 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists triple-double.

Embiid recorded the sixth triple-double of his NBA career today. His team matched up to him as well to make those 138 points. The team won the ultimate praise from the seven-time champion. “This is the NBA. This is a really good, really good Sixers team. And they played really, really well.”

Anthony Davis scored 17 points along with 11 rebounds while D’Angelo Russell had 12 points and seven assists in this game. The Lakers weren’t able to recover after the 13-point deficit they found themselves in after the 1st quarter. While the Lakers managed to stay within distance in the next two quarters, the 4th saw the 76ers crush them 40-14 for a 44-point victory.

All the Lakers can do now is heed Horry’s advice, accept that it was not their night, their rivals were stronger, and focus on the next game. Their next chance at redemption is on Thursday against the Detroit Pistons. That team’s on a major losing streak now, losing 14 straight, so it’s the Lakers turn to get into “the zone.”
