Magic Johnson was over the moon when the Washington Commanders defeated the Denver Broncos 35-33 on Sunday. Perhaps the win is a little personal. Because Johnson and the owning group of the Commanders were this close to owning the Broncos. He would reveal how they came to own the DC-based team on CBS Mornings.

Saying he’s “all in” on the Commanders’ success, the NBA legend says, “I’m not a guy who, you know, writes a check and stands on the sideline.” He would tell his partner, Josh Harris, the same. Perhaps that’s what drove Harris to bring Johnson on board because any team would benefit from an executive like the 5x NBA champion.

When asked what made Johnson and Harris take over the Commanders, the NBA superstar revealed that this partnership was always brewing. It just so happened to be with another team. Harris is in the ownership groups of the Philadelphia 76ers among other sports teams. He wanted to add an NFL team to his portfolio, and the chance came with the Denver Broncos.

Harris and Johnson bid on the Broncos but lost the chance. “[Harris] said if another team comes back up for sale, I want you in my group,” Johnson said. The chance came this year. Sealing a $6 billion deal, Johnson and Harris formed the owning group of the Washington Commanders. “God has a way of working everything out,” Johnson gushed. “I’m so happy we didn’t get the team because this is the perfect situation.”

Earvin “Magic” Johnson is a stigma-crushing, megawatt smiling, warm-hearted philanthropist. His generosity has impacted people across the nation. But he’s especially happy to be involved in the Washington DC community through the Commanders. He’s built many establishments like Starbucks and generated business in the city.

I’ve invested hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars in this city with the things that I built here.” As the Commanders advance fueled by Johnson, he has big plans to build a presence in the capital.
