The hosts at CNN’s newest show, King Charles, unanimously lauded Time Magazine’s choice for the Person of the Year; Taylor Swift. It didn’t stop them from making their own little picks, though. NBA pro-turned-analyst-turned-talk show host, Charles Barkley, picked his fictional Person/People of the Year from the world of sports. His favorites were two of the superstars who turned college football around in this past year.

He initially gave a shallow reasoning. “I’m a sports guy. I picked two guys – Deion Sanders and Jim Harbaugh.” But his reasoning ran deeper than that. “Those two guys generated more buzz for college football, which is right up there with pro football, it’s my favorite sport. Those two guys, whether you have an opinion or not, they were the most talked about people in sports. SO Deion and Jim are my two sportspersons of the year.

For her part, King wished Beyonce shared the honor alongside Swift. She did agree with Barkley though, as many would. Deion Sanders aka Coach Prime has been the game-changing force behind the Colorado Buffaloes turnaround. Once a down-and-out football program, the addition of PrimeTime and his son, Shedeur Sanders, as quarterback, has propelled the Buffs to strong contenders. Celebrities, including athletes, are on the Coach Prime inspiration bandwagon.

Chuck has been in Sanders’ corner since day 1. The Auburn alum had wished his school had signed him on. He even declared he would take the Buffs to a championship title. That, however, fell through as the Buffs aren’t in the College Playoffs. But Sanders assured they would go much farther next season.

There was a brief discussion that Charles Barkley was in the running for Person of the Year for being one of the most unfiltered media personalities in the field. The only time he’s been listed on a Time feature was on the Top 10 NBA Draft Fashions for his preppy burgundy suit in 1984 and the Top 11 Celebrity Pseudonyms. His panache in using relatable cartoons like Homer Simpson and Fred Flintstone got him that spot.

He’s got no animosity for Taylor Swift taking that spot, though despite cordially threatening her to treat Travis Kelce right in the King Charles premiere. He is a proud Swiftie and couldn’t be happier she is the Person of the Year.
