Don’t be misnaming Sir Charles. You’ll hurt his feelings. Tragically for him, the TNT crew lives for that. Charles Barkley has to grapple with a new nickname slapped on him that is nowhere as cool as The Round Mound of Rebound. He hates the sudden new name he got during TNT’s Halftime report that he called “Inappropriate.”

He called me Cletus? That was inappropriate… I don’t look like no Cletus,” ‘Cletus’ Barkley said while Ernie Johnson was relaying the stats from the Dallas Mavericks-Miami Heat game. While the hillbilly Cletus Spuckler from The Simpsons first comes to mind at that name instead of the 76ers icon, Shaquille O’Neal chimed in, “You look like a Rufus.” Whatever that means.

The one who re-christened Chuckster was Kenny “The Jet” Smith when he taunted him, “Come at me, Cletus.” The hilarious trash-talking reminded fans of one of Eddie Murphy’s famous movies, Nutty Professor, and the dad character he played, Cletus Klump. Almost immediately, fans flooded X with the iconic Klump family dinner scene when Grandma Klump said, “C’mon Cletus,” and other Cletus jokes from The Simpsons.

It’s interesting that Barkley is so appalled at getting called Cletus. Shaq threw the same line at him last year. Fans are still shocked Barkley doesn’t know the Nutty Professor reference a year in.

The many names of Sir Charles

Giving Chuck nicknames is the easiest way for the Inside Guys to get under his skin. Very recently, Barkley, who started this regular season 62lbs lighter told his co-analysts,Don’t be calling me Round Mound. First of all, I’m not Round Mound anymore. But ease up on the Round Mound.”

That was the nickname he earned during his NBA career for a combination of his physical size and insane rebounding skills. Even though he wanted fans to drop the ‘Round Mound,’ they are too attached to that nickname to fully let go of it.

The name that didn’t catch on was “300 Pounds of Greatness.” The TNT crew gave him that name when he accidentally stepped on Kenny’s foot. Barkley resented that name too no matter how much Shaq tried to prove he is in fact “300 Pounds of Greatness.” He boasted on Inside the NBA that he dropped from 352 lbs to 290 lbs and he’s not accepting names on his name.
