Michael Jordan is arguably the most well-known sporting personality in the world. There are not many in the world who would not recognize the basketball great. Interestingly, ‘MJ’ retired twice in his basketball career, once after winning his three-peat, at which point he was already a multi-millionaire.

However, there were times when the legendary athlete had to work on minimum wage. It was once revealed that Jordan once took a humongous pay cut to feature in an altogether different sport after the demise of his father.

Jordan, who has a net worth of $4 billion, first retired from the NBA in 1993. The year was quite an eventful one for MJ. He won his third championship subsequently completing his first three-peat but also lost his father James Jordan. MJ has often told the importance of his father in his life and career.

Soon after, he was playing for the Birmingham Barons, a baseball outfit, which caused media speculations about a sudden career change. While the interest was short-lived, Jordan opened up about his reason for playing baseball for the Barons.

He said, “I was gonna do it anyways. I had plans to do it anyways. He’s tried to talk me into doing it a couple [of] years before now and I wasn’t ready and I guess in doing it now it’s like a thank you to him.” It was reported that Jordan was making $5 an hour while playing in the minor baseball league. He also opened up about the role of his father in his baseball career.

Derek Jeter once gave massive props to Jordan

Derek Jeter made it clear that he takes some heavy inspiration from the basketball great.

The MLB superstar who’s one of the best baseball players in the world said this about MJ, “I pick his brain quite a bit. We play two completely different sports, we’re two completely different athletes, but the mindset is the same. You go out there, and you try to win regardless of what you’re doing. So, I picked his brain over the year.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Derek Jeter achieves the same level of greatness in baseball as Jordan did in basketball.
