Magic Johnson met his wife, Cookie, back when they both attended Michigan University. Although Magic and Cookie are happily married now, during their courtship, the two have had some ups and downs. As Magic had almost broken off their engagement at one point, it was Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas who pushed Johnson to understand the significance of having a loved one.

Cookie Johnson has stayed with Magic through all the tough times. In the book Believing in Magic: My Story of Love, Overcoming Adversity, and Keeping the Faith, she revealed how Thomas played a huge part in the two eventually getting married.

His then-best friend Isiah Thomas had married his longtime girlfriend just a year before and he was always in Earvin’s ear about the importance of building a home and a family and opening his heart to ‘the one’ who would be loyal, honest, and willing to walk by his side during the ups and downs of life’s journey. That positive reinforcement from people who surrounded him solidified my standing,” said Cookie Johnson.

Since Thomas had gone through a similar experience and had gotten married to his longtime girlfriend, he knew exactly how important it was to have someone like that in your life. Although Magic had been engaged to Cookie, he always had doubts regarding marriage.

But it all paid off in the end, as Magic married the love of his life in 1991. The two have been together ever since. Cookie has acted as Johnson’s support through all the tough times. During the show They Call Me Magic, Cookie Johnson revealed that when Magic had asked her to give back the ring, she replied ‘No,’ and slammed the door right in his face.

This eventually ended up working out for the best. Magic and Cookie got married in 1991, and now the couple has been together for over three decades.
