The 1988 NBA Finals MVP engaged in a candid discussion with Showtime Basketball, sharing some insights on various aspects and controversies in his life.

The 7x All-Star, disclosed several lesser-known aspects of his tenure with the Lakers. Despite his remarkable on-court achievements, the legend’s off-court life was marred by rumors and scandals. In 1981, James Worthy crossed paths with Angela Wilder at the University of North Carolina. They exchanged vows in 1983 and welcomed two daughters.

Speaking of the time, 3x NBA champion James Worthy revealed, “For a country boy like me, who only had two girlfriends, it forced me to get married. Because I was out here for a couple years alone and it was a death wish. I couldn’t handle it.”

 

Big Game James became a household name soon after he won a championship with the Lakers in 1985. In 1988, he also won the Finals MVP title for his iconic, clutch performance. Together with Johnson, the duo was a cultural phenomenon, redefining the sport and elevating the Los Angeles Lakers to basketball royalty.

However, following an off-court scandal, Worthy’s personal life took a tumble. He and his wife decided to part ways in 1996 after 12 years together.

This led Worthy to offer some advice on marriage during his interview. Reflecting on his own life, the legend advised against making hasty decisions about marriage.

James Worthy dishes out marriage advice

 He emphasized that without careful consideration and a strong commitment, such decisions might not yield positive results. Worthy noted, “If you’re not absolutely sure who you are and it should be a process that you go through you should be not… get married.”

In the 1980s, the Lakers’ distinctive playing style and quick maneuvers formed the foundation of their electrifying fast breaks. Lakers games consistently attracted a star-studded audience, and these celebrities often joined the team for post-game parties.

The Lakers’ string of championship wins and their consistency in making the playoffs solidified their reputation as a winning franchise. But they also shrouded their players’ lives with wild headlines and rumors. Unfortunately for James Worthy, it led to the end of his marriage.
