It’s a story Fat Joe narrated before. But it’s so good, it was worth another round when he sat down on Cam Capone News to talk about his good ol’ friend, Shaquille O’Neal.

At the peak of his NBA career, Shaq had branched out into music. With no background, the multi-talented NBA legend established himself as DJ Diesel. He would eventually work with several emcees, including Fat Joe.

There are many funny anecdotes between them. But the most hilarious was the time the 7-foot gentle giant terrified the rapper within an inch of his life.

This happened in 2008. Joe was in his Miami studio, working on his song as usual. It was dark and unlit. The last thing you want to see in a dark room is a ginormous figure.

Now all I see is the shadow of the biggest guy in the world sitting down,”?Joe recalled. He further said that this huge figure made him think scary thoughts. “Now for sure I’m gonna get killed, for sure I’m dead, like I’m walking in there, I’m like oh this is it, this is how they kill you.”

But when he turned on the lights, it turned out to be Shaquille O’Neal. “It’s f**king Shaquille O’Neal,” he exclaimed. To say the rapper was relieved is an understatement.

O’Neal was playing for the Miami Heat at that time. He had just received the news that he had been traded to the Phoenix Suns. His first response was to run over to his friend and tell him that he was heading to Phoenix.

Shaq confirmed this story

In the same interview, Joe would recall the first time he visited Shaq’s famous $11 million mansion in Miami. The rich and successful athlete also put his friend, along with Big Pun, in a hotel. There, they ran up the room service bill with hundreds of shrimp cocktails. Shaq still reminds Joe about that.

Shaq will also not let Joe live down the 2008 incident. The rapper previously told this story on Showtime Basketball in 2021 with a little more expletives in the mix. O’Neal shared that video on Instagram in 2022, clearly loving the effect he has on people.

As goofy as these two are, their relationship is genuine. Fat Joe celebrated the 30th anniversary of his debut album this month and O’Neal shared the rapper’s celebratory video to congratulate him. Joe also spent the majority of his interview praising his friend. They certainly make the perfect reps for International Day of Friendship this week.
