The NBA off-season is nearing its end with the Los Angeles Lakers‘ latest acquisition being the 27-year-old Christian Wood. Just a month back, Anthony Davis inked a historic three-year, $186 million max extension with the franchise, instantly making headlines in the basketball world. It’s a contract that even caught the attention of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who himself enjoyed an illustrious 19-season career that earned him close to $300 million in earnings.

However, there has to be something about the numbers that made Shaq feel a little disheartened on his latest appearance on the internet sensation Bobbi Althoff’s latest podcast.

During his illustrious playing career, Shaquille O’Neal was a force to be reckoned with, known for his imposing stature at 7’1″ and 325 pounds. However, when asked by Althoff if he still played sports, Shaq’s response took a humorous turn. He stated, “No, not anymore. I’m too old.”Althoff, seemingly surprised, probed further, asking, “You don’t look like you’re 51.” Shaq responded with gratitude for the compliment, to which Althoff humorously added, “I thought you were my age.”

To this, Shaq playfully remarked, “I wish I was your age; I’d be making $700 million right now.” The conversation then delved into the significant earnings of today’s young NBA players, possibly alluding to Anthony Davis’s record-breaking annual contract extension.

As the conversation flowed, Althoff couldn’t resist asking if Shaq had attempted a return to the court. In response, Shaq revealed, “Yes, I have, and I’m terrible at it.” Althoff, seemingly skeptical, expressed disbelief, to which Shaq humorously quipped, “I can’t even jump. I just had hip surgery, I don’t wanna have my hip out of place.”

While the exchange was lighthearted and filled with humor, it shed light on the stark contrast in earnings between NBA legends like Shaquille O’Neal, who made a significant impact during their era, and today’s rising stars like Anthony Davis, who are securing monumental deals at a much younger age.
