In 1985, Charles Barkley played in the final 60 games of the Sixers’ season. Throughout that stretch, he maintained an impressive average of 14 points and eight rebounds per game. This outstanding performance earned him a spot on the All-Rookie Team. However, all of this success was made possible by the guidance of a single individual. Reflecting on his connection with his mentor, Sir Charles shared the “worst thing” he has ever had to do in his life.

Charles Barkley’s heartwarming relationship with a mentor and legend?

Sir Charles was selected as the fifth overall pick in 1984 by the Philadelphia 76ers. He joined a prestigious lineup that included iconic figures like Julius Erving and Moses Malone, who had led the team to a championship in 1983. Although during Barkley’s time with the team, they couldn’t secure a title, the unique bond formed among the players was exceptional.

One team member, in particular, with whom Barkley forged a mentorship and genuine friendship, was The Chairman of the Boards, Moses Malone. The 12-time NBA All-Star provided invaluable guidance and skill development throughout Barkley’s rookie season.

Malone’s role as a mentor in Barkley’s life was monumental and he always held a special place in the legend’s heart. Naturally, the 3-time NBA MVP’s passing was a difficult and deeply challenging moment for Charles to endure.?In the podcast, he noted, “A bittersweet moment for me. I saw Moses Friday night at the Hall of Fame?He died that Sunday.”

Barkley added, ” I tell people that the worst thing I have had to do in my life was to do the eulogy at his funeral. It was so tough.? Chuck elaborated, ?But I got a chance to tell everybody what he meant to me and how much I love him because if it weren’t for Moses I don’t know where I would be today.”

Indeed, he would never have achieved MVP status without Moses’ assistance in helping him train and lose weight.

Moses Malone helped Charles Barkley level up his game

During the same interview, the iconic figure expressed his gratitude for Moses mentoring him when he was overweight. Moses guided him in shedding those extra pounds and provided training that ultimately improved his skills.?

Following Moses’ advice, Sir Charles was able to achieve an impressive milestone of accumulating 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 4,000 assists. He also won the 1993 NBA MVP award, a decade after his mentor Moses Malone won his sole NBA championship.
