Things weren’t easy when it came to traveling for the Wade family when Kaavia James was younger. They even handed out ?I am sorry? cards along with some earplugs to fellow passengers, just as a courtesy.

Union openly revealed that both of them had a tough time in the beginning but as they embarked on more trips together, their daughter became a pro at traveling. They put her favorite content on an iPad and headphones, making lengthy trips bearable. In an interview with PEOPLE, she said, “When she was younger, it was not great. We would literally hand out ‘I’m sorry’ cards and earplugs to the people around us,”. “But once we started traveling more, she’s been great. We download all her favorites on her iPad and she’s got her headphones. She’s really such a great traveler now.”

The Wades, a family of five, including Kaavia, her siblings Zaya, Xavier Zechariah, and Zaire, have found a second home in Great Wolf Lodge locations across the country. Union’s father living near one of the lodges in Arizona makes it a go-to destination for quality family time.

Looking back on his initial reaction, he knew that he had to open himself up, and be more understanding as a father. He had to recalibrate. Reflecting on Zaya, Wade intentionally listened to her and leaned into the wisdom of professionals. He admitted, ?Like many parents, I transmitted my fears to my child unknowingly.?. As he began to better understand himself, Wade realized there were elements of his own identity and manliness that had been holding Zaya back from fully embracing hers.

Parenting, like the Wade family, has shown, is all about learning from the small mistakes you make. Here, they are on the path of learning and unlearning to build a better home for themselves.
