Michael Jordan was a major prospect when he entered the league in 1984. Many major brands queued up to get his signature, including Nike. Even though the brand was mostly associated with track athletes at the time, they were ambitious about the NBA. However, Jordan was keen on signing with Adidas, who were already popular around the world.

But Nike made an interesting offer with a signature shoe which nudged MJ to sign the dotted line. On the other hand, hours of negotiation with Adidas was not fruitful and a deal could not be struck despite Jordan’s efforts to make it happen. However, MJ put this behind him and soon helped transform Nike.

Marcus Jordan’s reluctance to wear Adidas

Michael Jordan’s son Marcus Jordan played college basketball for the University of Central Florida. Notably, the school had a $3 million endorsement deal with Adidas. However, Marcus was promised during recruitment that he could wear Nike shoes, given Michael’s association with the brand. So Marcus wore the team’s Adidas jersey, but continued wearing Nike sneakers for games. But this did not sit well with the brand and they terminated the deal.
