Players often get an archetype comparison to some legends when first coming into the league. However, not since Kobe Bryant to Michael Jordan has one been as cut and dry as with Dwyane Wade. While the athletic 2-guard with a knack for the midrange was lethal in his time, his second coming has been just as explosive. With a smooth 3-pointer in his arsenal as well, Donovan Mitchell might be the modern-day version of what Wade would look like.

Moreover, the two even got to closely interact. During his previous stint with the Utah Jazz, Spida was there for the early stages of Wade taking over the team in a minor ownership role. As a result, the 3x NBA Champion could be seen on the sidelines for his team. Further, the two interacted firsthand, allowing Donovan to pick at his legend comparison’s brain. Those interactions eventually found a way to a friendship and brotherhood between the pair. One that had Mitchell quickly taking to his Instagram stories to celebrate Wade’s historic night.

But, the night wasn’t over for the former 5th overall pick. The returning hero was about to be left speechless with a historic announcement for the city of Miami.

The franchise would put the number 3 jersey up to the rafters in February of 2020. That day, the Godfather Pat Riley would call Wade the face of the franchise. But, with the Hall of Fame ceremony now in the rearview, Riley was ready to double down on his words. And of course, actions speak louder than words.

As a result, it wasn’t just an announcement or a speech but a promise. The first player in the team’s history to receive a statue outside their stadium. With a host of legends like Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James a part of the franchise at one time or another, the honor becomes double impressive.

Reflecting on the situation, the former number 5 overall draft pick was left genuinely speechless. While trying to celebrate the impact and the culture it would help create, it was easy to feel the emotions pouring through the legend.
