Lately, Kanye West’s name has been synonymous with controversy. The once endearing “genius” of the hip-hop movement has now long fallen from grace. With albums such as College Dropout, My Dark Twisted Fantasy, 808s, and Heartbreak, Ye shaped the sound of hip-hop. Even in the world of fashion, West forged a path that would lead to his designs being etched in the history of the industry. Especially, with his sneakers that brought a huge shift in the zeitgeist of sneaker culture.

Recently, this Boston Celtics legend compared Kanye’s influence on the culture to Michael Jordan’s. Despite the comparison seeming far-fetched, the former Celtics star eloquently makes his case.

In the latest installment of Showtime’s

KG Certified, the former NBA MVP engaged in a conversation with Nick De Paula. During the episode, the basketball legend shared anecdotes about Michael Jordan and delved into the world of the basketball shoe industry.

The discussion organically arrived at the impact of the hip-hop world on the sneaker industry. While they did talk about pioneers of rap such as Run DMC and collaborations featuring Jay-Z, they shifted to the impact of Kanye West. “I think you go to like the early 2010s, and it became the artist maybe was bigger than the players, like you could say Kanye overtook LeBron in a sense, and Yeezys were almost as big as the signature shoes, and then from there he built his own brand with Adidas, so there’s kind of the little steps,” remarked De Paula.

The Big Ticket seconded him, saying, “When Kanye’s building something he’s giving me a brand.” Ye’s influence on sneaker culture is undeniable, especially, from his Red October line to his Yeezy’s. However, in recent years, he has lost credibility due to several missteps and also lost his billionaire status.

Kanye’s Billionaire Status Stripped

As per Forbes, nearly half of the world’s billionaires have seen a decline in their fortunes over the past year, including the iconic Kanye West. Once a proud member of Forbes’ billionaire list, Kanye has faced a staggering drop of $1.6 billion in net worth, leaving him with a modest $400 million.

This sharp decline traces back to his Adidas fashion partnership, which had been a lucrative venture, propelling his wealth to $2 billion. However, Kanye’s controversial remarks and penchant for stirring up disputes led Adidas to sever ties, leaving him in a precarious financial situation.
