The USA has been at the top of the basketball pyramid for decades. May it be the Olympics or the World Cup, they are always the favorite to win the Gold. But being at the top of the pedestal also means that every other team is eyeing to take them down. It came as a surprise when the USA fell short against Lithuania during the ongoing FIBA Basketball World Cup. Their weaknesses were exploited, and the media has been having a field day since then. Joining them was a 7x NBA champion, who shared his thoughts on why the team fell apart on the court.

The former Los Angeles Lakers forward didn’t hold back and called out the team and the coach for their atrocious performances.

Team USA suffered a humiliating defeat against Lithuania on September 3. Many claim that the close score at the end is deceptive. When we look at how the match actually went, it is easy to understand that the USA team was heavily outplayed by Lithuania. 7x NBA champ Robert Horry had some tough words to share on his podcast, Big Shot Bob.

The pod members mentioned that Team USA was heavily undersized and said “Lithuania is a lot bigger than they are, Team USA is small“. Horry didn’t hold back when talking about the guard-oriented playstyle of Team USA. He said, “you have to look at their coach. He (Steve Kerr) thinks guards are the best players to ever play this game.”?

Kerr created the Golden State Warriors dynasty with this playstyle. According to Horry, he is trying to replicate that with this FIBA team. But since he currently didn’t have the same players on this team, he hasn’t been able to make it work.

The co-host asked what the team needed to do to improve their rebounding against teams like Lithuania. To this, Horry responded by saying that they didn’t have to worry about it anymore as Lithuania was defeated by Serbia and is no longer in contention for a medal.

Horry believes that considering the “team’s lack of chemistry and size”, this was the best game to lose because it put the team in an easier bracket. But the main question still remains. Is Steve Kerr wrong for implementing this playstyle?

Takeaways from Team USA’s loss

Steve Kerr said in an interview that the loss didn’t change their goals in the end. Kerr believed the team had what it takes, and it’s just about the team figuring things out. This loss meant that the USA didn’t have to go up against Serbia and had to face Italy instead in the quarters.

Following their defeat to Lithuania, the USA came out with the intensity from tip-off against Italy and made easy work of them. Anthony Edwards has taken the reins as the best player on the team.
