Ever since retirement, Dwyane Wade has often used his platform to send powerful messages. One who has always been alongside the Miami Heat legend is his wife, Gabrielle Union. Probably the most impactful moment came when Union and Wade gave a brave speech at the President’s Awards back in February. The power couple caught the attention of many and Michelle Obama seemed to be one of them. The 59-year-old praised Wade and Union for their eye-opening speech to support their daughter, Zaya’s decision. Well, guess who decided to pay back the honor? Gabrielle Union.

The Wade family faced some criticism after their daughter Zaya got the green flag from the court to change both her name and gender. Despite supporting Zaya through thick and thin, there were some who wanted to take the decision instead of leaving it to the parents. Well, Michelle Obama decided to stand up for the Wade family.?

Appreciating their heart-touching speech in the President’s Award, Michelle Obama shared on her Twitter,?“I hope you?ll watch this powerful speech by @DwyaneWade and @itsgabrielleu. This is what it means to show up for your child?and for all of our children. Zaya, I?m so proud of you. You?re an inspiration for us all.”

Finally, Union got the right time to repay the 59-year-old for her kind gesture towards Zaya. In a recent YouTube interview, Union was asked if she’d choose “Wellness Retreat with Michelle Obama or Book Club with Barack Obama.”?

Without any hesitation, the 50-year-old answered,?“Wellness retreat with Michelle. She’s a good time,” with a grin on her face. It’s not surprising to see Union choose the former First Lady as the duo shares many common interests.

Interestingly, Zaya even interviewed Michelle a couple of years ago to celebrate the release of the 59-year-old’s Becoming memoir. And it’s safe to say that the 16-year-old was over the moon. “I’m meeting an idol. I’m literally meeting an idol,” she said. While it has been tough for the young model, she has always received unconditional support from her parents.

As mentioned above, many did not support 16-year-old Zaya’s decision to change her gender and name. To put an end to the criticism once and for all, Wade and Union decided to use a big stage.?

In the speech, Wade shared,?“Zaya, you?ve made me a better human just simply by being who you were born to be: our baby girl, Zaya Wade. So, baby, thank you for showing the world what courage looks like.”?

Union added, “We honestly don?t approach this work as activists or leaders as much as we do this as parents…Parents who love our children.” Their words earned widespread acclaim and helped shine the light on the plight of many transgenders, such as Zaya.
