Today, athletes are among the biggest celebrities in the world. But the relationship that athletes share with fans is a wholly unique one. As a result, the passion, whether complimentary or vitriolic, can lead to some tense exchanges. Charles Barkley, in particular, isn’t shy of engaging with a crowd, positive or negative. However, the Round Mound of Rebound does have a few ground rules for any fan interaction.
Earlier, comments by the NBA MVP turned NBA analyst about fans approaching him at a restaurant caused quite a stir. Barkley was vehemently against the practice and wanted to put a stop to it. So, one bold fan took the endeavor upon himself. Tuning into the Steam Room podcast, he would bring up the comments to Chuck. His question was simple, “What are the ground rules in approaching the Chuckster?”
Rather surprisingly, the Philadelphia 76ers legend would give a long soliloquy about his thoughts on the matter. “I always believe you sign autographs and take pictures.” Except, in one particular case. “First and foremost, the only time you don’t do it is when somebody’s eating…Its annoying when you putting a piece of food in your mouth and somebody ask for an autograph, you have to put the meal down…Because, once somebody interrupt you at dinner, that gives everybody else the right do it, right? And then it kind of becomes a revolving door.”

Thankfully, that barometer exists for a meal only and not to the bar. Or, worse, not Diet Coke. “I’ll take it as a compliment. Listen, there’s no nobody that can say I’m not signing autographs and taking pictures. I’m gonna always sign. All that goes with the job. They’re not paying you all that money just to play basketball. I mean, that’s part of the job.”

Charles Barkley and his peculiar relationship with San Antonio
The first inklings of Barkley’s distaste for the state, and its women in particular, became evident early on. Owing to the “everything is bigger in Texas” moniker, the Chuckster would make some potentially offensive jokes towards the state’s females and their size.
He would continue that same trend when discussing Victor Wembanyama. Before he silenced any doubters, questions about Wemby’s size and stature were rampant in NBA circles. However, Charles wasn’t among the ones worried.

His reasoning was simple. The Texas food was going to alter Victor’s shape pretty quickly. So, unless food of any kind is concerned, Charles Barkley is an open book for fans. Unless, you’re from Texas. Or else, beware.
