Charles Barkley Dishes Out Safety Precautions as New Year’s Eve Festivities Set In: “Everyone Is on the Highway Drunk”

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration. While many would prefer to be with their family at home, some would love to go out and enjoy themselves. With the New Year right around the corner, Charles Barkley shared the best advice that he could for people to take care of themselves on New Year’s Eve, only for his co-host to laugh at his comments.

During a recent episode of Steam Room, a fan asked Charles Barkley whether it was better to stay indoors or to go out on New Year’s Eve. The 60-year-old Barkley had a quick answer for this, as he has already experienced a bad New Year’s Eve in his life.

“My advice is: get a small group of friends; y’all stay at somebody’s house, where everybody is safe. Because number 1: You want to drive as little as possible because everyone is on the highway drunk probably. But you can’t be around fools when they are drinking. And that’s one of the days you just start drinking early and you go all night so –” said the 1993 MVP as his co-host Ernie Johnson started to chuckle hearing that.

Ernie was not having Barkley’s comments about everyone being drunk that day. While he agreed that some people might be having a little too much, it is not the norm everywhere. Although Johnson cannot relate to this, having had his own run-in with the cops on New Year’s Eve among many others, Barkley knew exactly how some people would behave when under the influence.

Charles Barkley was once arrested for DUI

The Phoenix Suns legend did not bring out this example out of thin air. Back in 2008, Barkley was stopped by the police on New Year’s Eve. Barkley hosted a big party, and as he was heading home later that night, Barkley did not pay attention and ran a stop sign right in front of the police as he had been drinking earlier.

The officer quickly made Barkley stop his vehicle. Right as he walked up to Barkley, it was apparent that he had been drinking. Barkley was not able to make his way out of the tough situation and was taken to the police station. As he had already been working for TNT for 8 years, he called the president of the channel from the police station to let him know that he had been arrested.

Well, it looks like Barkley did not always have the best of ideas during New Year’s, so it is understandable why he would prefer for people to be safe and stay indoors that day.
