There is no denying that Joel Embiid is one of the best players in the league right now. His rep and skill have reached the level where he is now being compared with the all-time greats. Recently, Kevin Garnett compared the Philadelphia 76ers star with the NBA’s favorite big man, Shaquille O’Neal.
KG said that Embiid is just like Shaq but also has a few extra skills to him that Big Diesel didn’t have. During an episode of KG Certified, Garnett and Paul Pierce sounded very impressed by the 76ers star.
KG said, “What Joel is doing is just pure dominance. Like dominance to the level of…when Steve Nash went at Shaq.” Pierce said that what separates Embiid from the other great big men in the league is the combination of power and finesse that he has. He said, “We ain’t seen no big man like this because he is giving you the power and the finesse. The combination of power and finesse and the shooting touch at that size, we’ve never seen it.” Since the conversation is about a center, Shaq’s name had to come up in the conversation.

KG said, “Watching him is like…this is what Shaq would have looked like with a jump shot.” The two also argued over whether Shaq had good handles or not but eventually agreed that Embiid is a superior athlete because he can do the standard role of a big man and can also bring in quality skills wherever required.

Kevin Garnett talks about the Joel Embiid switch
The Boston Celtics legends seem to be highly impressed by what they have seen so far from Embiid. The 15x NBA All-Star said that the 76ers player has a switch in him that allows him to change his game according to the need of the hour. He said, “When I watch Joel, he hit the button and he goes electric.” KG said that Embiid can have impressive shooting skills at his choice and can also play the role of a good passer. And when it is time to switch it up and be a dominant big man on the hardwood like Shaq, he can do that too.
He said, “He got a hell of a converter. He can go finesse and all-electric when you don’t even hear him… Joel Embiid to me is the most dominant player in the game of basketball.” That is some high praise coming in from two of the most celebrated veterans. It will be interesting to see what the OG Big Man thinks of the comparison.
