American icon Tony Bennett, who entertained the world with his soul-soothing voice, passed away on Friday. The absolute denial and sorrow from several celebrities stand as proof of the impact he created over decades. The reason for his death hasn’t been revealed yet. However, the music legend was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s back in 2020. Joining millions of fans in giving condolences were Barack Obama, Martin Scorsese, a former Charlotte Hornets star, and more.?

The legend of Tony Bennett

96-year-old Bennett’s contribution to the country goes way back to World War II. Apart from his interests in music, Bennett served in the US Army. He was drafted in 1944, during the final stages of the war. While he excelled for his country in the field, Bennett also had a large focus on ‘humanity’.?

Bennett was a heartthrob and became a teen idol in the 1950s. His craze among women was palpable when 2,000 female fans, dressed in black, mourned his marriage to Patricia Beech outside their New York ceremony. Singing wasn’t his only quality, though.

The ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco‘ fame was a painter as well. The Smithsonian Institution and the Butler Institute of American Art showcase Bennett’s paintings under his name. He is also the founder of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, New York.

He was also a big supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. He was a part of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches along with Martin Luther King Jr. and refused to perform in apartheid-era South Africa. All these character traits are the huge reason behind the much-known success of this music icon. Now his unexpected passing has stirred several condolences from legends. Former POTUS Barack Obama thanked Bennett as he tweeted, “Michelle and I will always be honored that he performed at my inauguration. We’re thinking of his wife Susan, his kids, and everyone who is missing him today.”

Legendary American director Martin Scorsese shared some great words as well. He wrote, “At a certain point, we started to imagine that Tony would live forever. Of course, he didn?t. Nobody does. But the music? That?s another story.”
