In the relatively short history of the Miami Heat franchise, it hasn’t enjoyed a more significant rivalry than the one with the Boston Celtics. Since the middle of the 2000s decade, the two teams have constantly been at odds. Whether it was Dwyane Wade alone or with LeBron James by his side, the rivalry continued on for years. Even today, the two sides remain constantly at odds, with two consecutive Eastern Conference Finals coming down to Game 7s.

However, in the new era, an old rivalry is simmering. After weeks of back and forth, a former NBA champion chose his horse for the race.

Over his career, Richard Jefferson took on many roles. While he started off as a starter-caliber player, he soon turned into a star with the New Jersey Nets. After multiple successful seasons, he made his way over to the Golden State Warriors pre-dynasty.

In his final years, however, RJ was teaming with LeBron on the Cleveland Cavaliers, he was a key contributor off the bench for those Finals-bound teams. Since retirement, Jefferson has transitioned to life as a commentator and podcaster.

Known for his hilarious attitude and jokey personality, Jefferson is never shy to stir the pot. As a result, it wasn’t long before he added his fuel to the budding iteration of the Paul Pierce – DWade rivalry. Taking the Celtics Champion’s side, Richard said, “Ball in the hands for a last-second shot, I would probably fear Paul Pierce more than DWade.”

While certainly an interesting take, it isn’t without some statistical backing. Pierce, during his tenure in the NBA, hit the most buzzer-beaters in the entire league.

A return of the Pierce-Wade rivalry

The rivalry began anew after Pierce’s comments. The one-time NBA champion claimed to be a better player than the Miami Heat legend. While his primary argument was the players Wade was teammates with throughout his career, the 3-time Champion was having none of it.

Responding with a brutal diss, Dwyane seemed to put an end to the feud. Further, his “brother” Udonis Haslem compared to Paul’s comments with “Motherf*****s getting diarrhea.” However, will Jefferson’s comments add a new wrinkle to this story? Only time will tell.
